July 2001: WorldNET Report
The following report is an amalgamation of the two daily updates which featured on the DoncasterRovers.co.uk website over the weekend of the 2001 tournament;
Rovers supporters team, the Donny R'sonists, reached the final stages of the annual WorldNet competition for the first time this weekend. A very successful group stage on Saturday saw the R’sonists finish on goal difference behind group winners Celtic to progress to the knock-outs as the best second placed team in the tournament. Congratulations must go to the Doncaster team, especially as Celtic and Arsenal were the favourites to qualify for the latter stages of the competition.
The R'sonists, were drawn against Middlesborough in the last 16 of the tournament, the only side to have won all their games in Saturday’s group stage. Donny matched their opponents and were unlucky to be go behind to a "harsh/controversial/diabolical" penalty with only a minute of the game remaining. The Doncaster team pushed forward, with time against them, in search of an equaliser, but having gone to a 1-4-5 formation were caught open at the back twice more in four minutes of injury time. The final result was Middlesborough 3, R'Sonists 0. The Doncaster team ended the tournament 9th out of 51 entrants. Bearing in mind the potential size of the fan base for the Premier League teams being represented, the Doncaster team did incredibly well.
Further consolation for the Doncaster team came when Middlesborough went on to win the WorldNet Cup beating Dumbarton 2-0 in the final. Arsenal's team, who Doncaster beat 1-0 on Saturday, won the Plate competition - which was held between teams that did not make it through to the main knock-out competition; they beat Bradford 1-0.
