Donny R'sonists 2010-11 Fixtures, Results and Scorers
Match Reports
24th July: WorldNET 2011 Report
Another year, another weekend getting sunburnt in a field in on the outskirts of Leeds for the Donny R'sonists as the Rovers' supporters side participated in their 14th WorldNET tournament. The R'sonists side was a keen blend of sloth and experience and featured two WorldNET ever presents in Matt Smith and Alan Brown who have bravely participated in each and every WorldNET since the 1998 tournament in Reading at which the side made it's bow. With the luxury of an 11am kick-off on the Saturday, the R'sonists were even more liberal than normal in their approach to Friday's 'quiet night' in Headingley, with the side perhaps indulging in one drink too many... and then going on to the next place for a further three drinks too many.
So to the match action and the R'sonists began with arguably their toughest group grame, up against reigning champions Bradford. With three of the squad's more accomplished players still yet to arrive three minutes before kick off, manager Matt Smith was left to field a bear XI with centre-half Jonathan Orridge colunteering to don the gloves. Depleted though they may have been the R'sonists started brightly and after preventing the Bantams from opening the scoring with a canny offside trap, they went on to take a shock lead. Andy Sheldrake's near post corner was turned in on the volley by flying winger Louis Bailey, the Blazin' Squad connection catching both opponents and team-mates unawares. With Jonno marsalling his box well at the other end, Donny held out in front to half-time.
After the break the Bantams had the better of thing and came close to drawing level only for Jonno to somehow save a fierce driven shot by catching it deftly between his testicles. Eventually though Bradford did draw level; as a break down the left was finally ended by a clumsy Sheldrake challenge in the box and the resulting penalty was slotted home. The R'sonists were not about to settle for a point though and Andy Harriman had a chance of goal, volleying wide from Rob White's flicked pass. Sadly though one point eventually became none for Donny as Bradford nicked a winner in the closing minutes; a chipped cross escaping the grasp of Jonno and Bradford turned in the loose ball to secure a 2-1 win.
Next up for Donny were Ipswich's Punch Drunk FC, although that name could have applied to the R'sonists who struggled to create anything in the first half and went into the break a goal down; Ipswich's forward getting on to a through ball and slotting it between the legs of 'keeper Glen Wilson. In the second half things improved dramatically though as Rob White got onto an Andy Harriman pass and rounded the 'keeper to level the scores. Soon after the R'sonists were in front, White again on hand to slot the ball home. However, next it was Ipswich's time to draw level as a bouncing ball fell into the path of their veteran Martin Turner and he turned the ball home from close range. Late on White thought he'd won it for Donny as he cut in from the left, but though his low shot beat the 'keeper a Town defender somehow got back to clear off the line and it finished 2-2.
Last up in the group stages for Donny were West Ham and as with the Bradford game the R'sonists made an encouraging start. Matt Harriman deployed up front received the ball and was flattened as he tried to take it round the keeper; the result was a penalty which Matt calmly slotted home to put Donny 1-0 up. It was a lead they held until half-time though they needed a good save from Andy Harriman getting down to his right to keep it that way. After the break it was West Ham's turn to score from the spot, afforded the chance by an inocuous looking coming together between Jonno Orridge and his man. With the match level West Ham pushed for a winner, but it was Donny who struck on the break; Ian McKenzie releasing White on the right and his cut-back was controlled and (eventually) turned in from close range by Alan Cullingworth. A 2-1 win for Donny proved enough to guarantee second in the group behind Bradford and put them through into the main cup competition.
There are many sides who take WorldNET very seriously, not so the R'sonists, and the prospect of an 8am kick-off on Sunday was not about to curtail their Saturday night 'loosening exercises'. Half the side returned to base just four and a half hours before kick-off, sadly the goalkeepr and captain would not appear until one and half hours after full-time. So for the second day running a bear XI trudged their way over to Pitch D, and attempted to look vaguely like a football team. The good news was that opponents West Brom 'B' claimed to have undergone a similar training regime the previous night... sadly though they could still run around and shoot and stuff as shown as they bore a path on goal straight from kick-off.
The R'sonists fashioned few chances of their own, though some neat passing between Wilson, White and Sheldrake did create one opportunity for Cullingworth, but his effort flew wide. Eventually the inevitable happened as West Brom took the lead; a low shot from just outside the box, deceiving stand in goalkeeper Matt Smith. After the break there was more of the same with the R'sonists struggling to move the ball, or themselves and West Brom having the better of things and they soon doubled their lead with a shot across Smith into the far corner. From the restart came brief hope for the R'sonists as Cullingworth decived the 'keeper and his own team-mates with a cross that curled gloriously into the far corner of the net, but a 2-1 defeat was as good as it got. Out before breakfast.
As ever, the R'sonists enjoyed an eventful weekend playing some likeminded supporters teams, and thanks is extended to manager Matt Smith for organising the weekend for the Donny lads, and of course the legendary Betty and Rog of the IFA for putting the whole tournament together. Long after the R'sonists had returned home the main competition was won by the supporters of RC Lens, who defeated Bradford in the final. The Plate competition was won by Portsmouth who beat Darlington's Uncovered FC, whilst Bury defeated Halifax in the final of the Veterans Competition.

18th June: Donny R'sonists 7-1 Grimsby Old Skool
The R'sonists nothced their largest victory of the season at the Ian Wilson Community Sports Village in Rossington this morning, defeating Grimsby Old Skool 7-1. The match got off to a decidedly even start, with neither side mustering a shot on target in the opening quarter of the fixture. However, the R’sonists soon forged ahead thanks to the pace and finishing of Matt Findlay; twice the forward got onto the end of through balls and on both occasions side-stepped his man before slotting past the visiting ‘keeper. His third was arguably the pick of the first half goals though as Marc Cartlidge controlled a deep cross on his chest before back-heeling to Findlay and he made space for a shot; curling the ball into the far corner.
The R’sonists moved personnel around in the second half but considered to have the better of things adding to their tally through Cartlidge who broke onto a neat flicked pass from manager Matt Smith before lobbing the advancing keeper and finding the far corner of the net. Quarter of an hour after the break it was 5-0 to the R’sonists as the ball fell to Karl Scott just inside the area from a corner and he successfully toe-ended through a crowd and into the roof of the net.
Grimsby were rewarded for their hard work as they found the net themselves; Andy Sheldrake’s interception inadvertently splitting his own defence and the Grimsby forward won the race to the ball to poke it beyond Andy Harriman. The R’sonists would go on to add to their lead though, making it 6-1 as Cartlidge got in behind the visitors’ defence and controlled a long goal-kick from Harriman, before chipping the ball over the advancing ‘keeper. The scoring was rounded off by Findlay though as he was brought down in the area and dispatched the resulting spot-kick himself to make it 7-1 to the R’sonists. As ever the match was as ever played out in the right spirit with barely a foul committed in the whole 90 minutes.
R’sonists line-up: Glen Wilson; Ian McKenzie, Matt Harriman, Karl Scott, Alan Brown (Louis Bailey); Karl Smith, Marc Cartlidge, Andy Sheldrake, Paul Buckle (Matt Smith); Matty Findlay, Andy Harriman

28th May: Sheffield United Inter Blades 3-5 Donny R'sonists
The R'sonists travelled to Concord Park in Sheffield and Saturday for a second meeting of the season with the Inter Blades. It was the hosts who started the brighter in the match and they duly took the lead ten minutes in as James Kemp found the back of the net. The R'sonists poor luck in the opening quarter of an hour was typified as they tried to hit back and in seperate attacks hit the outsode of both posts.
Eventually though Donny did bring the game back level, and midway through the half even found themselves ahead thanks to a goal each from Andy Harriman and Paul Farra. However, the Blades were not out of things by any means and Kemp levelled the scores again almost immediately and then with half hour played completed his hat-trick with a well executed lob.
In the second-half though the R'sonists would kick-on and enjoy the better of things a they drew level through Farr again and then went ahead with a goal from Andy Harriman. The come-back win was sealed by manager Matt Smith who, in scoring Donny's fifth goal, maintained his record of scoring in every single R'sonists season.
R'sonists squad: Dave Burkett, Ian Gostling, Trevor Charlton, Karl Scott, Paul Exton, Andy Harriman, Louis Bailey, Graham Moss, Matt Smith, Matty Findlay, Alan Cullingworth, Rich Dillon, Paul Farra

26th February: Donny R'sonists 3-1 Barnsley SFC
After going four months without a match, owing to injuries, venue unavailability and snow amongst other things, long-running Rovers’ fans’ team the Donny R’sonists finally returned to action on Saturday morning. The R’sonists took on the Barnsley Supporters team on the grass at the Ian Wilson Community Sports Village in Rossington, and had the rare luxury of three subs for this IFA league game.
Manager Matt Smith went for a tried and tested 4-4-2 formation and it paid off as the R’sonists took control from the start, playing the sort of neat passing football Sean O’Driscoll would be proud of. The R’sonists patient approach brought chances for Matty Findley and Trevor Charlton early on, but the visitors could have been 2-0 up after quarter of an hour had it not been for R’sonists Director of Football Glen Wilson; the defender twice sliding to clear off the line with ‘keeper Andy Harriman beaten.
Scares over the R’sonists pushed on and took the lead midway through the half; some neat football ending with Allan Riggall releasing Matty Findley in the right channel and his firm low drive just deflected off a defender on its way inside the far post. Before half-time Donny had doubled their lead as Findley flicked the ball into the path of Andy Sheldrake and his low cross was turned into his own net by a lunging Barnsley defender.
The R’sonists changed things round after the break with ‘keeper Andy Harriman going up front for the last half hour, but not before he’d come off his line to make a smart save five minutes into the second half. Harriman made just as much of an impact up front too as he netted the R’sonists third with a measured finish to wrong-foot the visitors’ keeper. Findley threatened to add to the R’sonists tally, but the game’s only other goal went to the visitors. Stand-in keeper Wilson coming for a corner he was never likely to get leaving the Barnsley forward an open goal into which to volley a last-minute consolation.
Donny R’sonists line-up (4-4-2); Andy Harriman; Ian McKenzie (Richard Dillon), Glen Wilson, Matt Harriman, Louis Bailey; Allan Riggall, Andy Sheldrake (Christian McKenzie), Marc Cartlidge (Matt Smith), Rob Newton; Trevor Charlton, Matty Findley

14th August: Donny R'sonists 3-4 Kidderminster HIST
Rovers were not the only team making their home league bow today as long-running Rovers supporters team the Donny R’sonists also began their 2010-11 season. The R’sonists hosted the Kidderminster Harriers supporters team at the Ian Wilson Community Sports Village in Rossington, as the visitors stopped off en route to watching Kiddy’s opening game of the Conference season at York.
The fixture was a fairly evenly contested one from the start, with the visitors taking the lead midway through the first half. A chipped ball over the backline saw a Harriers attacker just get between Alan Brown and ‘keeper Dave Burkett to poke the ball home. The R’sonists hit back though and equalised from a corner on the half hour mark as Andy Harriman turned the loose ball home. The visitors struck again before the break though as Karl Smith was harshly deemed to have handled in the area and the Harriers tucked home the resultant spot-kick for a 2-1 half-time lead.
Just minutes into the second-half the R’sonists had levelled the scores once again as Andy Sheldrake picked up the ball in midfield and broke into the area before hitting a low shot into the far corner of the net. With the game swinging from end to end the R’sonists went in front with quarter of an hour to go as Sheldrake put in a fine cross from the right and Andy Harriman headed in his second of the game to make the score 3-2.
Kidderminster pressed hard for an equaliser but were struggling to get past Burkett who got down well to his left to make one particularly fine save as the game entered the final ten minutes. With just under five minutes to play though the visitors found the equaliser as a long ball down the middle was just taken off Burkett’s toe by a Harriers’ forward and he turned the ball in. The scoring still wasn’t done though as Kidderminster found a winner in the final minute, a deep cross to the far post reaching the Kidderminster forward who cut inside well before hitting a low shot just inside the post.
A disappointing result for the R’sonists but a decent game played largely in the right spirit. Next up for the Donny lot is a game with the Hull City supporters’ team Tiger Chat in a fortnight’s time.
